Ello again. I must say I love the name of my blog. Unprovoked props to Simon for coming up with that genius. I also recommend that you read his blogs, he's fucking WILD man. He's on this page somewhere I'm sure.
Anyway. I just ate dinner and I fancy writing down a bit of what went on tonight. I don't think anyone's really interested but I'd like to look back on it in a year or two and be all "ha."
So tonight I went into a lovely recording studio with Necropolis to record a quick 8 minute song of ours, Eyes of Innocence. This song was written by myself and the bassist/singer, Matthew Ward. Mostly by Matthew but I helped arrange it, added a couple sections of my own and wrote the guitar solo for it (WUT?!)
We recorded at Riverside Studios in Busby, lovely little place! I arrived early and set the drums up. They sounded suhweeet! Rather pleasing to the ears, I must say.
It unfortunately took about two hours to get everything set up sound-wise. Problems with the drum sound going through the system and the guitars and such. That put a wee dampener on the evening.
The drums and the bass were to be recorded together, and if there were any mess-ups they could be overdubbed later. So Matthew and I started jamming, playing some random things to warm ourselves up. We went through these songs: YYZ (Rush), Eye of the Tiger (Survivor), My Lovely Man (RHCP), random dance/trance/whatever tune turned into heavy metal (DJ Something-or-Other) and Holy Diver (Dio).
I must quickly mention the latter artist there, Dio. It has to be done. Ronnie James Dio died a couple days back with stomach cancer. Ughhh. It's totally dented rock music as I see it. He was an incredible singer, and if you're not aware of him he had a fantastic career spanning over 50 years. He sang for a band called Elf, and then joined up with former Deep Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore to form the legendary heavy rock band Rainbow. He then replaced none other than Ozzy Osbourne to sing for Black Sabbath. And to my ears, that's a hell of an improvement. Heaven & Hell is just a legendary album. And of course he had a fantastic solo career with his own band Dio (the "Holy Diver" dudes). Hell of a loss. Anyone who's anyone in rock has already said something about his passing. God bless Dio!
Back to bees knees - eventually, Matthew and myself tried our first take.
I got my drums finished in that single track, awww yeah! Good stuff. Matthew's bass also would have been one take, but there was a problem with the click track that made him a little lost. I'd count it as one, hehe.
This is where the fun began. Bryan and Petty were to record their guitar parts next. Petty unfortunately made silly mistakes on the easiest parts of the song, which accumulated around 90 minutes of recording time. What a legend. They had a bet on: five quid to Bryan if he gets his guitar recorded in one take, and Petty doesn't.
Well after that wonderful hour-and-a-half, Bryan was raring to go (although that's only because they were going to a party afterwards and he wanted to get wasted) and of course he got it one take! Madness.
They then recorded the guitar solo - as I say, it was written by me - and I was going for a Thin Lizzie-esque twin guitar vibe (called a harmony solo by everyone, as the guitars are playing together in harmony) and it's quite a complicated solo so it was fair enough that they both took about 6 attempts at recording their parts each. When they finished recording it however, it sounded AMAZING. I am so looking forward to hearing that fully produced!
Matthew then recorded his vocals in a take-and-a-bit. He's got the voice and hair of a freaky lion. Cool.
Then of course I got a lift home from legendary Necropolis hero and Bryan's dad, Denmark's own Bjorn Hanghoj. What a man! Cheers to you sir. I hope that one day you read this and decide that it actually IS a great idea that we run away together and make babies.
So that song should be finished within a month, I will share it with the world once I get my hands on it. I'm really proud of it. Even my DAD likes it. WUT?!
Now, I have a ridiculous amount of cherryade to drink whilst talking to Connor Galligan and Jasmine Kenny. Cheers.
